Sunset is an outdoor cinema that runs in 5 cities (Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Wollongong and Brisbane) over the summer. I worked with Sunset for a period of 7 years, having been thrown the challenging task of building their first website in under a week back in 2012, completing a site redesign in 2014 and in 2018 re-building their site from scratch in WordPress.
Over the years the site has moved from being desktop-focused, responsive and now to a mobile-first design approach. The display of the program, ability to buy tickets and presentation of information to movie-goers have always been core to the design focus. Overlaid on that approach is balance of promoting the outdoor cinema as an event and the movies that will be screened each night.
Site Development
The most recent site was built on WordPress with the PODS framework plugin installed to provide the platform for custom post types, content and functionality. Key features of the site were hand-coded as functions; including the ability to upload movie details and images, selecting screening times, program display, structure of the site based on locations and sponsor ads / logo management.
Past functionality no longer used includes filtering screenings by categories, selecting screenings based on dates and movie club signup based on location.
Ticket sales were embedded into the site via a widget on individual screening pages.
